Splitwise vs Stang
Splitwise and Stang are not really competitors. Splitwise answers "who owes whom" after a shared expense, and does it better than any budgeting app. Stang answers "where is my money going" when you earn in one currency and spend in others, and it has no bill splitting at all. If you are dividing costs with other people, use Splitwise. If you are tracking your own spending across borders, use Stang. Plenty of people travelling with a partner genuinely need both.
Comparison pages usually exist to argue that one app wins. This one mostly exists to stop you buying the wrong thing, because Splitwise and Stang overlap far less than their App Store categories suggest.
We make Stang, so check anything here that matters against our pricing page and against Splitwise’s own help centre.
The one-sentence difference
Splitwise tracks money between people. Stang tracks money across currencies.
Splitwise is a ledger of obligations. Four of you split a villa, one card paid, and it keeps a running balance until somebody settles. Nothing about that is a budgeting problem — you could be well under budget and still owe your friend $400.
Stang is a record of your own spending when “your currency” is not a single thing. You earn in one, spend in two or three, and want it all converted into one number you can reason about, with a budget that runs monthly rather than per trip.
Those are different questions. Most disappointment with either app comes from asking it the other one.
What Splitwise does that Stang does not
All of it, where splitting is concerned. To be completely plain: Stang has no bill splitting, no shared balances, no settle-up, and no concept of another person owing you money. There is no partial version of this feature hiding somewhere.
Splitwise also handles the surrounding mechanics well — groups that persist past a single trip, uneven splits, and a record both people can see. If you have ever tried to reconstruct who paid for what from a month of bank statements, that is the problem it removes.
Where Splitwise is limited: its free tier caps you at four expenses a day, and currency conversion, receipt scanning, search, charts and transaction import all sit behind Pro. It also does not publish a price — Splitwise’s own terms say the cost “may vary due to date of subscription, country, local taxes and regulations, and promotions” — so check what your account is actually offered.
What Stang does that Splitwise does not
Multi-currency as the default, not a Pro extra. A home currency plus up to four secondaries, converted at live rates, on the free plan. Splitwise converts a shared expense; Stang is built for the case where the currencies never stop changing.
Budgets that run monthly. With per-category limits and an alert at 80% of the month’s budget, free on every plan. Splitwise deliberately does not do budgeting.
Days per country. Stays derives a running day count per country from where your expenses happen — no GPS, no check-ins — which is the number that decides a 90-day visa or the 183-day tax residency rule. Nothing in the splitting category does this. It requires Pro and is currently iPhone-only.
One-message logging. Type “lunch 350 THB” and it parses the name, amount, currency, category and date. Free plan includes 30 of these a month; Pro is unlimited.
A published, flat price. $3.99/month, $19.99/year, or $49.99 once. CSV export is free on every plan.

When the answer is both
This is the common case and worth saying out loud rather than pretending you must choose.
If you travel with a partner, Splitwise holds the balance between the two of you, and your own share goes into Stang alongside everything else you spend. The two do not integrate, and logging a shared dinner in both takes a few extra seconds — but they are answering different questions, so neither replaces the other.
So which one
- Splitting costs with other people → Splitwise. Stang cannot help you.
- Your own money, one currency, one country → honestly, neither is essential; a general budgeting app or a spreadsheet will do.
- Your own money across several currencies → Stang.
- Visa or tax-residency day counts → Stang, on iPhone.
- Travelling with someone, and tracking your own spending too → both.
More of the category, including where each option is the wrong choice, is on the best travel expense apps.
